What GEO is: showing up in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI search
GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of getting your content cited in AI-generated answers. How it differs from SEO, seven practices that work, and the ones that remain unproven.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting a website’s content used and cited as a source in the answers produced by systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews. SEO aims for a high position in the results list; GEO aims for a place inside the answer.
The term spread in 2023 through an academic paper whose authors included researchers from Princeton University. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and “AI SEO” are used for the same work; all three mean the same thing.
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
- Unit. In SEO a page is ranked. In GEO a passage is picked from inside the page and added to the answer.
- Result. In SEO a blue link; in GEO a sentence inside the answer with a source citation beside it.
- Measurement. In SEO, position and clicks. In GEO, citation count, brand mentions and visits from AI tools.
- Query. In SEO, two or three words. In GEO, long, conversational and often comparative questions.
The important point is what they share: GEO does not replace SEO; it is built on top of it. Most of these systems run a classic search before generating an answer and read the pages they find. A page that cannot be crawled, is not indexed or appears for no query cannot enter an AI answer either. That is why the technical SEO foundation is still step one.
How does AI search choose its sources?
The process is roughly three steps: the system splits the question into several sub-searches, fetches pages for each, then picks and combines the passages that answer the question directly.
The consequence is clear. What gets selected is not the overall quality of the page but the paragraph that makes sense when read on its own. Text that opens with “as mentioned above”, or hides the answer three screens down, cannot be quoted even if the information is correct.
What should you do to appear in AI answers?
1. Put the answer first. The first sentence or two under each heading should answer the question directly; detail comes after. Give a system looking for a definition the definition.
2. Write headings as questions. People ask AI questions. Instead of “Pricing”, the heading “What drives software development pricing?” matches the query directly.
3. Give concrete data and sources. In the research mentioned above, adding statistics, quotations and citations to the text were among the methods that raised visibility noticeably, while keyword stuffing did not help. Write “3–5 weeks” rather than “fast delivery”.
4. Say who you are, consistently. Company name, address, services and author details should be identical on the site, on Google Business Profile and in directories. Structured data (Organization, Article, FAQPage, Service) makes that information machine-readable.
5. Let the bots in. Check your robots.txt for blocks on GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Content should be present in the HTML without JavaScript; most of these bots do not render a page the way a browser does.
6. Do not neglect Bing. Some AI tools draw on the Bing index. Adding the site to Bing Webmaster Tools and announcing new pages through IndexNow is a cheap step most sites skip.
7. Get mentioned off-site. Models do not learn about a brand from its own site alone. Appearing in trade publications, comparison articles, customer reviews and directories raises the odds of being named in “which is the best …” questions.
What remains unproven
Not everything sold in this field works. To be honest about it:
- llms.txt. A proposed file that presents a summary of the site for AI. There is no verified statement that the major providers use it as a ranking or citation signal. It is easy to add and harmless; we use it too, without expecting miracles.
- “Guaranteed first place in AI.” Answers are regenerated for every query and vary by person. There is no fixed position to guarantee.
- Writing separate content for AI. Writing that is clear, sourced and well structured for a human is also the best writing for a machine. No second version is needed.
How is GEO success measured?
Measurement is not yet as mature as in SEO, but three things can be tracked today:
- Referral traffic. In GA4, group sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com into a separate channel group. The setup logic is the same as in the GA4 guide.
- A fixed question set. Pick the ten to twenty questions your customer would ask and ask them again in the same tools each month: is your brand named, which page of yours is cited, which competitors appear?
- Brand searches. A user who sees your name in an AI answer often does not click, then searches for you later. A rise in brand queries in Search Console is an indirect signal.
A caution: AI summaries reduce clicks on informational queries. So judge success by the quality of the leads coming in, not by session counts alone.
Why now, for businesses in Türkiye?
Competition in Turkish-language content is far lower than in English. In most sectors the number of Turkish pages that answer the question directly, cite sources and carry structured data can be counted on one hand. The site that writes the first proper answer remains the source for that question for a long time.
For businesses serving a local area the same logic applies on the map side: a firm with consistent Google Business Profile details also surfaces in “near me” style AI answers.
Frequently asked questions
Does GEO end SEO? No. AI systems still rely on search indexes to produce answers. A site with weak SEO will have weak GEO too.
Does GEO need a separate budget? For most businesses, no. Most of the work is good SEO and good content practice; what is added is content structure and measurement setup.
When do results show? In tools that answer by searching, a new page can be cited shortly after it is indexed. In answers that rely on the model’s training data, the effect is much slower.
Which content types get cited most? Definitions, comparisons, step-by-step guides and pages containing concrete figures.
