What a digital marketing agency is, what it does, and how to choose one

A digital marketing agency manages customer acquisition across a business's online channels. Which services it offers, the order it should start work in, and five things to check when choosing one.

A digital marketing agency is a services firm that plans, runs and measures how a business wins customers through search engines, social media, email and its website. Its job is not to place ads but to tie the budget spent to a measurable outcome: a lead, a sale, an appointment.

The second half of that definition matters. Opening an ad platform and setting up a campaign is a few hours’ work; what makes an agency an agency is being able to show which spend produced which sale.

Which services does a digital marketing agency offer?

  • Search advertising. Search, Performance Max and remarketing campaigns on Google Ads.
  • Social advertising. Campaign management on Meta (Instagram, Facebook), LinkedIn and TikTok.
  • SEO and content. Technical fixes, a content plan and organic visibility.
  • Measurement. GA4, conversion tracking, tag management and reporting dashboards.
  • Conversion rate optimisation. Landing page, form and checkout tests.
  • Email and automation. Flows that bring existing customers back.
  • Local visibility. Google Business Profile and map results.

No business needs all of these at once. A good agency’s first job is to shorten the list; the logic of channel choice is covered in digital marketing strategy.

Are an ad agency, a social media agency and a performance agency the same thing?

No, and the difference changes what is in the quote:

  • Advertising (creative) agency: Brand, campaign idea and creative production. Success is measured in awareness.
  • Social media agency: Content calendar, posting and community management. Success is measured in engagement.
  • Performance marketing agency: Paid channels and measurement. Success is measured in cost per lead and revenue.
  • SEO agency: Organic search. Success is measured not in rankings but in organic leads.

Most “digital marketing agencies” are strong in one or two of these. If you want sales and you are being sent post counts, you are working with the wrong kind of agency. What the performance approach means is covered in a separate piece.

In what order does a good agency start work?

The order shows the agency’s intent. The right one is:

  1. Measurement audit. Is conversion tracking correct? You cannot optimise on wrong data.
  2. Fix the leak. The landing page and form flow get repaired. Sending traffic to a page that does not convert is burning money.
  3. Test budget. Hypotheses are tried on a small budget; every campaign has a stop threshold.
  4. Scale. The profitable channel grows, the rest is switched off.

An agency that talks budget in the first call without asking about measurement will run this order backwards.

How do you choose a digital marketing agency?

1. Whose name are the accounts in? The ad account, Analytics and Tag Manager should be opened in your name, with the agency given access. Otherwise you lose all historical data and campaign learning the day you leave.

2. What does the report show? Not impressions and clicks; leads, cost per lead and, where possible, leads that turned into sales. Ask for a sample report.

3. What is the fee tied to? A flat fee, a percentage of spend and a performance bonus each reward different behaviour. We compare which suits you in ad agency pricing.

4. Who will look after your account? The senior person in the sales meeting and the person managing the account may not be the same. Ask for a name and the weekly hours allocated.

5. Does it know your sector? In fields such as healthcare, finance and law, platform policies are strict. An agency that does not know the rules can get your account suspended.

Promises to stay away from

  • “Guaranteed first place on Google.” Nobody can guarantee a ranking; Google’s own guidelines say so.
  • “Results in the first month.” Ads need a learning period, SEO needs months. We compare which channel pays off when in SEO vs Google Ads.
  • A long lock-in contract with no exit clause. Good work renews itself month by month.
  • No access to the account. If you cannot see your data, you do not know what you are buying.

Channel choice for manufacturers is a topic of its own: digital marketing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a digital marketing agency cost? The fee depends on the number of channels managed, the ad budget and the pricing model. Ad budget and agency fee are separate items; to plan them together you can use the Google Ads budget calculator.

Does a small business need an agency? With one channel and a small budget you can run it yourself or with a freelancer. Once several channels and a measurement setup are needed, an agency becomes economic; the comparison is in agency, in-house or freelancer.

What should I prepare before starting with an agency? What an average sale is worth to you, how many leads a month you can handle, and where your leads come from today. Without those three numbers no target can be set.

When will I see results? On paid channels the first meaningful data forms within a few weeks; in SEO the effect is measured in months.

What to expect, and when, once you have chosen an agency is covered in the first 90 days with a marketing agency.
