What does a social media agency do: management, content and ads
A social media agency runs the content plan, posting, community management and advertising together or separately. What the service covers, how to measure it and what to ask when choosing one.
A social media agency is the team that runs a brand’s presence on channels such as Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X and TikTok: it plans what to post, produces the content, answers comments and messages, and manages the ads. These four jobs are often sold as one package, but they need different skills and produce different results.
Knowing which one you are looking for before you talk to an agency makes it easier both to compare proposals and to measure results.
What does social media management cover?
- Strategy and content plan. Which channel, for whom, how often, on which topics? A monthly content calendar is the output of this plan.
- Content production. Copy, images, short video, stories. Whether a shoot is needed should be settled upfront.
- Posting and scheduling. Publishing approved content at the right time.
- Community management. Replying to comments and messages, handling negative comments. If messages turn into sales, this is the most critical part.
- Ad management. Buying reach with a budget: targeting, creative tests, measurement. More in Meta ads management.
- Reporting. What was posted, what worked, what changes next month?
What is the difference between organic posting and ads?
Organic posts reach your followers, and people the platform recommends them to, for free. Reach is limited, but it builds the brand’s voice, credibility and relationship with existing customers.
Ads reach an audience you choose, for a budget. They are the quick way to bring in new customers, but they stop when the budget stops.
For a business with sales targets the two work together: organic posting builds trust, and ads put new people in front of that trust. A business expecting sales from organic posts alone, or running ads with an empty profile, is using half the equation.
How is success on social media measured?
Likes and follower count are not results in themselves. Depending on your goal, look at:
- Enquiries and sales. Forms, messages and calls coming from social media. If the source of messages is not tracked, the channel bringing the most sales becomes invisible.
- Engagement rate. Comments, saves and shares relative to follower count.
- Reach and new audience. How many non-followers you reach.
- Response time. How quickly messages get answered.
Tracking social media enquiries through to the sale needs a measurement setup; the basics are in the GA4 guide.
Seven questions to ask a social media agency
- How many pieces of content a month, and in what format? “Three posts a week” and “three videos a week” are not the same job.
- Who produces the content, and are shoots included? An agency working with stock images and one that shoots on site do different work at different prices.
- Who answers messages and comments, and how fast? If messages turn into sales, the answer belongs in the contract.
- How does approval work? Who approves, and how far ahead?
- Are the ad budget and the agency fee separate? Fee models are covered in ad agency pricing.
- What will the report contain? Enquiries and sales, beyond like counts.
- Whose name are the accounts in? Pages, the ad account and business manager should be in your name, with the agency given access.
What to watch for in healthcare
For clinics and health tourism businesses, social media comes with extra rules: before-and-after images, promises of treatment results and the use of patient reviews are restricted by both regulation and platform policy. What to watch so the ad account is not shut down is covered in healthcare ad policies on Google and Meta.
Frequently asked questions
Is a social media agency the same as a digital marketing agency? No. A social media agency focuses on social channels; a digital marketing agency also covers search ads, SEO and email. More in what does a digital marketing agency do.
Do we need to be on every channel? No. Being consistent and good on the one or two channels where your customers spend time beats being irregular on five. For B2B sales LinkedIn, for consumer sales Instagram, is often the priority.
When do social media results show? Ads produce data in the first weeks. Organic growth and brand awareness build up over months.
Can we manage social media ourselves? Yes, if you have the time and a person to produce content regularly. An agency usually makes the difference in consistency, production quality and the ads side.
At Boygantech we run social media management in the same team as ads and measurement, and we report results in enquiries and sales, not likes. To talk, get in touch via our digital marketing agency page.
